Canadian company Research in Motion, maker of Blackberry Smartphones, has acquired Nashua-based Paratek Microwave Inc.
In an announcement posted on Paratek's website, company President and CEO Ralph Pini said his company will continue to develop the state-of-the-art antennae that has put them on the map, as part of RIM.
"Paratek will continue to innovate and to bring leading edge adaptive tuning solutions to the industry. We are very excited about this transaction and the opportunity to serve RIM and realize our vision," writes Pini. "As always, we will continue to pursue the development of state-of-the-art adaptive tuning technologies. We look forward to working with our new colleagues and integrating our solutions into RIM’s BlackBerry product offerings."
Alan Spoon of Polaris, a Boston-based institutional investment firm, is calling this a "game changer," in a blog post written about the merger on the company website. Polaris has been a long-time investor in Paratek.
Writes Spoon: "Integrating Paratek’s technology into mobile phones is a game changer for two reasons. First, the technology allows mobile devices to upload and download large amounts of data faster, making for longer battery life, which — together with Paratek’s more effective antennae design — means devices can become smaller/thinner. Second, the technology — Tunable RF — improves the mobile user experience by reducing dropped calls and allowing reliable data flow as users move across an ever growing number of frequency bands from provider to provider."
According comScore, a digital industry research site, RIM continues to struggle to keep up in a competitive Smartphone market, lagging behind main competitors, Apple iPhone and manufacturers of Android devices.
